About CMHS

CMHS National Advisory Council
Subcommittee on Consumer/Survivor Issues

Welcoming and Introduction

Chair Russell Pierce convened the meeting at 10:11 a.m. Subcommittee members in attendance included Jon Brock, Sylvia Caras; Caroline Kaufmann; Juli Anne Lawrence, Donna Preston and Sharon Yokote. Maria Mar and Kevin Fitts participated by telephone. Ex-National Advisory Council Member Frank Burgmann and the following CMHS staff attended Anna Marsh, Paolo del Vecchio, Iris Hyman, Carole Schauer and Risa Fox.

Review of Agenda

Mr. Pierce welcomed members of the subcommittee and reviewed the ground rules for meeting participation. He presented the agenda and asked for additions.

Welcoming and Introduction

Mr. Pierce introduced Anna Marsh, Ph.D., Acting Deputy Director, CMHS, who spoke about her involvement with the consumer/survivor movement in the 1980s, when her life was changed by reading Judi Chamberlain's book, On Our Own. She asked that the subcommittee help answer these questions: What are the most important issues for the consumer/survivor movement? What are the failings of the mental health system that we might correct? What human rights violations should be addressed? How can CMHS best support the movement?

Mr. Pierce invited members of the subcommittee to introduce themselves. They gave descriptions of their involvement with the mental health system and commented on their special interests in terms of the subcommittee's activities.

Please note: We use the term "consumer/survivor" because it is currently the most widely accepted terminology. We recognize and respect that others may identify themselves otherwise.
