Community Support Programs Branch
Alternatives Conference
Since 1985, the Community Support Programs (CSP) has supported the annual national Alternatives conferences organized by and for consumers (also referred to as ex-patients or survivors) of mental health services. The purpose of these conferences is to provide a forum for consumers from all over the nation to meet, exchange information and ideas, and provide and receive technical assistance on peer support and peer-operated services along with other relevant topics, such as self-help, protection and advocacy issues, empowerment and recovery.
The conferences also provide information on best practices in mental health and support services. The knowledge gained through attending these conferences helps consumers advocate for effective treatments and services, and improve service systems.
Starting in 1992, the Consumer Technical Assistance Centers have rotated the hosting of the Alternatives conference.
