Children and Youth Resource Collection

This SAMHSA DBHIS installment focuses on the reactions and mental health needs of children and youth after a disaster, and contains resources from both the child trauma and disaster behavioral health fields. It is organized into four categories: 1) Books, 2) Activities, 3) Tips and Guides, and 4) Assessment Tools. View the collection's annotated bibliography, which contains links to each resource; and helpful links, which provides links to organizations, agencies, and other resources that address children and youth issues.

Resources address various audiences, including the following:

  • Children and youth—Disaster-related coloring and activity books that help children and youth understand disasters, foster resilience, and encourage the expression of feelings related to disasters
  • Parents and caregivers—Information on child traumatic stress and developmentally appropriate guidelines for helping children and youth, and self-care materials for parents and caregivers
  • Teachers—Developmentally appropriate guidelines for discussing disaster with children and classroom activities designed to help children mark disaster anniversaries
  • Other professionals—Specific information for mental health clinicians, healthcare professional, and the media
