FACT: Animal abuse is now recognized as a sign of mental disorder.

FACT: 70% of those who have been convicted of abusing animals have also been convicted of violent or anti-social crimes against people.

FACT: Twenty-nine states now treat some form of animal abuse as a felony, up from five in 1986. Even more are expected to follow suit.

On May 7-13, 2000, thousands of animal protection and sheltering agencies across the country will honor the message of the American Humane Association's Be Kind to Animals Week by hosting special events, talking to the media, and educating people on the humane treatment of animals.

Most mental health professionals agree that animal abuse is directly linked to domestic violence, school violence, crimes, and "conduct disorder." We are highlighting this week so that you may use this time to talk to your family, friends, co-workers, and community members about mental health issues from a different angle.
