Spring is the time of year that brings to mind images of rebirth and regeneration. As the buds on plants and trees burst forth into colorful blooms, hope springs eternal. In keeping with the spirit of resiliency, renewed growth, and optimism, May is Mental Health Month. The theme for this month-long campaign to raise public awareness of mental health issues is "Mental health matters, now more than ever." Many private, Federal, State, and local organizations are providing informational seminars, publications, and events relating to mental health.

It is estimated that one in five Americans suffers from a mental illness. Yet two-thirds of individuals do not seek the proper help they need. There are many reasons why people with mental illness suffer needlessly. Many individuals lack adequate health insurance coverage for mental health treatment. The social stigma of being labeled "mentally ill" discourages many others.

This year's campaign aims at breaking down public stereotypes of persons with mental illness. Furthermore, the theme highlights the importance of making mental health services readily accessible to those in need. The Center for Mental Health Services continues to lead Federal efforts to improve prevention and mental health treatment services for all Americans through its numerous programs and funding opportunities. Everyone is encouraged to take an active role in helping to wipe out the myths and misconceptions surrounding mental illness by participating in this month-long event.
