April 2006 Highlights

National Public Health Week April 3-9, 2006
National Public Health Week (NPHW) is an annual observance that focuses on issues vital to improving public health. This year’s NPHW theme is “Designing Healthy Communities: Raising Healthy Kids.”

National Autism Awareness Month
This annual observance provides an opportunity for the autism community to educate the public about autism--a neurological disorder that typically appears in early childhood, usually before age 3.

Counseling Awareness Month
Counseling Awareness Month is an annual observance that focuses on educating the public about the importance of counselors and the significant contributions counselors make in helping individuals live healthier, happier, and more productive lives.

Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) Program Spotlight - Protection and Advocacy
CMHS provides grants to States for programs to protect and advocate for the rights of people with mental illnesses in public and private mental health treatment facilities. States use these Federal dollars to provide general information and referrals; investigate reports of abuse, neglect, and rights violations; and find appropriate legal and legislative remedies to correct injustices.
