    What is National Therapeutic Recreation Week?

    National Therapeutic Recreation Week is an annual observance to promote awareness of the benefits of therapeutic recreation programs and services. Recreational activities for individuals with mental illnesses and individuals with disabilities are highlighted and encouraged during this weeklong celebration. This observance is celebrated across the country with workshops, health fairs, and informational events.

    What is the history of National Therapeutic Recreation Week?

    National Therapeutic Recreation Week was established by the National Therapeutic Recreation Society (NTRS) in 1984. Each year, NTRS selects a different theme as a focus for the observance. This year's theme is "Therapeutic Recreation - Quality Sports and Health." Recreational sports can provide participants with many physiological and mental health benefits.

    What are the benefits of therapeutic recreation?

    "In areas of functional capacity, therapeutic recreation intervention was found to affect motor development, social skill development (including social interaction skills), cognitive development, communication behavior, enhancement of play and recreation skills repertoire, and vocational competence" (Summary of Developmental Disabilities Consensus Group in Benefits of Therapeutic Recreation, A Consensus View, 1991). Therapeutic recreation has been found to improve intellectual, emotional, and physical aspects of health in individuals with mental illnesses or disabilities.

    What qualifies as therapeutic recreation?

    The U.S. Department of Labor defines recreational therapy as "a variety of techniques, including the use of arts and crafts, animals, sports, games, dance and movement, drama, music, and community outings [that are used to] treat and maintain the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of clients" (U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook). Essentially, therapeutic recreation, or recreational therapy, is any organized activity undertaken for the purpose of mental and/or physical rehabilitation or benefit.
