Joan Gillece, Ph.D.Joan is one of the program managers of NCTIC focused on training and technical assistance. She works as project director for the National Coordinating Center for the Seclusion and Restraint Reduction Initiative at the National Association of State Mental health program Directors. Joan previously worked with the Maryland Mental Hygiene Administration as the Director of Special Needs Populations (populations including citizens with serious mental illness, incarceration, homelessness, co-occurring substance about disorders, or hearing impairment). Joan has a Ph.D. in human development from the University of Maryland, an M.A. in art therapy from George Washington University, and a B.A. in art, sociology, and social work from Hood College. Joan has spoken extensively on developing model systems of care through partnerships across agencies and regularly presents and provides training on trauma-informed approaches within systems of care. Joan Gillece’s expert areas include: trauma and special needs populations; alternatives to seclusion and restraint; collaborative agency approaches to care; chemical dependency and substance abuse; trauma-informed approaches within mental health settings; and the importance of trauma-informed care.
