William E. Schlenger, Ph.D.
Bill is a principal scientist in Abt Associates’ Behavioral Health Research
Program and a psychologist with broad interests and background in health,
mental health, and substance abuse research. Although best known for his contributions
to the literature on the epidemiology of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD),
his fundamental interest involves improving our understanding of the relationships
among mental health, substance abuse and other behavioral and health problems.
His career has centered on large-scale behavioral research studies conducted
by multidisciplinary teams. Bill is currently a senior investigator on an
NIMH-funded study of the efficacy of an internet-based, cognitive behavioral,
self-help intervention developed for use with combat-exposed troops returning
from Iraq and Afghanistan, which is being conducted with Marines returning
to Camp Lejeune, NC. In addition to his position at Abt, Bill holds adjunct
faculty appointments in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
at Duke University Medical Center and in the Department of Psychology at North
Carolina State University.
Bill has written and spoken extensively on the epidemiology of post-traumatic
stress disorder, behavioral and mental health, substance abuse and treatment for
people with co-occurring disorders, and community and work-based preventative
interventions, and disaster response behavioral health treatment and care.
Bill Schlenger’s expert areas include: the epidemiology and treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder, substance use and abuse, evaluating the efficacy and
effectiveness of behavioral health interventions, disaster response treatment and care, and clinical research and methodology.
