SAMHSA Launches New Approach by Funding Knowledge Development Grants

SAMHSA has recently introduced a new approach in funding grants. The new focus is named the Knowledge Development and Application (KDA) Program. It is designed to: identify policy and service delivery issues of national concern; provide relevant findings; and ensure that information learned is used to improve state-of-the-art practice at the community level. In fiscal year, 1996, 42 new SAMHSA KDA grants totaling almost $17 million were awarded including:

    • Managed Care. Sixteen grants, totaling $8.2 million, have been awarded to examine the impact of alternative managed care.
    • Homeless Prevention. Twelve grants, totaling $1.8 million, have been awarded to document and evaluate homelessness prevention interventions.

The remaining grants focused on substance abuse issues.

    Additional Grants Planned

The Division of Knowledge Development and Systems Change will be announcing synthesis and consensus grant initiatives in the near future. These will focus on developing effective approaches to address significant systems issues and implementing these approaches within communities.

Over the next year, it is hoped that grant announcements will be released addressing: supportive housing, criminal justice issues, Native American children, early intervention, the impact of managed care on older adults, and HIV/AIDS.

IMPORTANT: For grant announcement information contact the Information Center.
