    CMHS Expands Consumer Initiative

On October 23, 1996, the Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) launched a new, searchable database of mental health consumer/survivor consultants on SAMHSA's National Mental Health Information Center World Wide Web site.

This new service will allow mental health consumers/survivors to network with one another around issues of common interest. It also will enable individuals and organizations to find information resources on 68 different topics related to consumers, ranging from advance directives to women's issues.

The new database is made up of over 300 individuals who have given their permission to be listed in the public database. Each database listing includes the name of the individual or organization, contact information, and up to five areas of interest.

The Information Center is a national, one-stop resource for mental health information. It offers a toll-free telephone information and referral service, 1-800-789-CMHS (2647). The Information Center also is online with a toll-free Electronic Bulletin Board, 1-800-790-2647, and a World Wide Web site, http://mentalhealth.samhsa.gov/ By dialing into the bulletin board, users can network with others, join in discussions on mental health, and search its library of information files. By accessing the web site, users can retrieve documents, order publications, find links to other mental health sites, and search databases of local and national resources.
