A Peek At Important New Publications

Mental Health, United States, 1996, SAMHSA/CMHS' recently released report, provides up-to-date analysis and information available on mental health and mental health services. It includes chapters on managed care, including policy considerations, lessons learned from behavioral managed care approaches, the status of managed behavioral health care in America, and behavioral health care in health maintenance organizations (HMOs).

Before You Label People, Look at Their Contents, a new brochure, offers six simple steps people can take to end discrimination:

    • Learn more about mental illness.
    • Insist on accountable media that is sensitive to and accurate on mental health issues.
    • Obey the laws in the Americans with Disabilities Act.
    • Recognize and appreciate the contributions to society made by people who have mental illnesses.
    • Treat people with the dignity and respect we all deserve. Think about the person--the contents behind the label.

Mental Illness Is Not a Full-Time Job is another recently released publication that focuses on employment needs of people with mental illness. Listed in this brochure are several organizations offering employment information. Ten useful tips for achieving employment success are featured in this brochure.

All of the above publications, plus an enormous amount of other useful information, can be ordered from the Information Center.
