    Toolkits
Step In for National Mental Health Consumers' Self-Help Clearinghouse

    by Marie D. Verna

Recognizing that many consumers need technical assistance but cannot afford in-person consultation, the National Mental Health Consumers' Self-Help Clearinghouse has started work on a project (supported by CMHS) to develop "toolkits," innovative materials that are designed to be used by consumer groups across the country. The toolkits are reusable and portable and can be used by any consumer with even a minimal understanding of the subject matter.

Each toolkit comes in a complete package that includes audio/video tapes of a particular workshop or training, a master set of hand-outs for reproduction, audio/visual materials such as overhead transparencies and slides (if applicable), and a short instruction manual on how to conduct the training session.

The Clearinghouse is currently considering toolkits on the following topics:

    • Establishing a drop-in center
    • Peer support
    • Getting the word out about your group
    • Rights protection and advocacy
    • Developing into a consumer-run business

By providing technical assistance through toolkits, the Clearinghouse will be able to expand the number of consumer groups and organizers its serves. Call the National Mental Health Consumers' Self-Help Clearinghouse for more information about availability (800)553-4539 ext. 292).
