The Journey Of Native American People with Serious Mental Illness
Executive Summary
Group Workshops
To facilitate discussion and ensure that the range of issues was examined from all perspectives, five groups were formed to define the most pressing issues in mental health service delivery to Native Americans and to devise recommendations for dealing with them. The five groups were composed of 1) Consumers; 2) Family Members; 3) IHS/ State/ Tribal Officials; 4) Administrator Providers; and 5) Direct Care Providers.
In addition to these five groups, conference participants met in State groups to discuss issues in their home States. Seizing this unique opportunity to engage in dialogue with a broad range of constituencies within, and in some cases across, States, most of these groups made plans to continue the networking started at the conference and to hold formal discussions of identified issues after the conference.
