A map of the United States showing the number of psychiatric treatment beds per 100,000 civilian population, by State. In 2002, Wyoming had the highest ratio of beds to population, at a rate of 150 or more. North Dakota, Mississippi, Maine, and Massachusetts each had 125–149 beds per 100,000 people. The next highest ratio (100–124 beds per 100,000 people) was concentrated in New England. The upper Midwest and Middle Atlantic States had 75–99 beds per 100,000 people. The Great Lakes region, the South, the Southwest, and the Northwest had the lowest ratio (fewer than 75 beds per 100,000 people).
