A bar graph showing the distribution of treatment episodes at the types of 24-hour facilities in 1955 and 2002. In 1955, 63 percent of mental health episodes requiring 24-hour care were treated in State and county hospitals, 21 percent in non-Federal general hospitals, 9 percent in private psychiatric hospitals, and 7 percent in residential treatment centers. In 2002, 48 percent of mental health episodes requiring 24-hour care were treated in non-Federal general hospitals, 22 percent were treated in private psychiatric hospitals, 13 percent were treated in State and county hospitals, 7 percent were treated in each residential treatment centers and all other mental health organizations, and 4 percent were treated in VA medical centers.
