    On the CMHS Front
    Did You Know?

CMHS Director Bernard S. Arons, M.D., has been given the lifetime achievement award of the International Association of Psychosocial Rehabilation Services. He was honored for his leadership in efforts to improve the lives of people with mental illness.

SAMHSA Conference Grants. This past spring, grants were announced to support up to 75 percent (to a maximum of $50,000) of the total direct costs of mental health and substance abuse conferences. Future plans are for these grants to be announced again. For more information, see "Where to Turn."

Consumer-operated Self-help Programs Submit Applications. A number of applications have been received by CMHS in response to the Guidance for Applicants (GFA) soliciting applications for a program study designed to enhance knowledge about how consumer-operated self-help programs contribute to the rehabilitation and recovery of individuals with serious mental illness. It is expected that 8-10 project sites and one coordinating center will be funded in the fall.

Grants to Support Consumer and Consumer Supporter National Technical Assistance Centers. SAMHSA, CMHS, announced the availability of funds to support three technical assistance centers, two to promote consumer/survivor self-help activities and one technical assistance center for supporters of consumers/survivors. The program is intended to create technical assistance centers that act as resource centers for material development, training, skill development, interactive communication opportunities, networking and other technical assistance activities directed at facilitating self-help approaches, recovery concepts and empowerment.

Statewide Consumer and Consumer Supporter Networking Grants. SAMHSA, CMHS, announced the availability of grants to increase the capacity of statewide consumer/survivor and/or consumer supporter networks to participate in the development of policies, programs, and quality assurance activities related to mental health. Specific objectives are to strengthen organizational relationships among consumers, families, advocates, and networks; to foster leadership and management skills, and identify technical assistance needs for consumer/survivor and/or consumer supporter organizations.

Internet Training. This summer consumers/survivors will attend a two-day CMHS-sponsored Internet training at Boston University. Trainees will learn how to use the Internet and how to train others to do the same. The curriculum being used will be further refined by Boston University and disseminated nationally.

Community Action Grants for Service Systems Change-Basic Action Grant Program and Hispanic Priority Initiative. These grants are designed to support the adoption of exemplary service delivery practices related to the delivery and/or organization of mental health services or supports. In addition to the continuation of its basic Action Grant Program, CMHS is joined by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention and the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment for a Hispanic priority initiative to support exemplary practices for adults and adolescents with mental health and/or substance abuse problems.
