Did You Know?
SAMHSA Conference Grants. SAMHSA provides support for conference grants for up to 75 percent (to a maximum of $50,000) of the total direct costs of mental health and substance abuse conferences. The next round of applications for these grants must be received by May 10, 1999.

The National Association for Rural Mental Health (NARMH) has published their latest report, "Rural Mental Health: 2000 and Beyond." This CMHS-funded document describes a process and strategic directions for rural mental health in the coming years and represents the work of consumers/survivors and family members, rural mental health practitioners, administrators and policy makers. Reducing Stigma. CMHS has a number of activities in progress to continue efforts to reduce stigma by:
- Establishing and oversee SAMHSA-wide anti-stigma work group to address the issue of stigma in the mental health and substance abuse arenas.
- Producing a video entitled "Stigma...in Our Work, in Our Lives" created by the Anti-Stigma Project of On Our Own of Maryland, Inc., a state-wide consumer/survivor organization.
- Developing bi-lingual radio public service announcements to be distributed to Spanish-speaking radio stations.
- Developing an anti-stigma poster.
- Developing a guide on how advocates can respond to stigma in the media.
"Promising Practices: Systems of Care for Children with Serious Emotional Disturbances and Their Families in the United States of America." This new seven-volume series, was developed by grantees funded by CMHS's Comprehensive Community Mental Health Services Program for Children and Their Families. Volumes in the series describe promising practices in training, service delivery, collaboration, school coordination, managed care, cultural competence, and roles for families in systems of care.
