    Depression Facts and Figures



    • Each year, depression affects about 17 million American adults; that’s almost one in every 10. (American Psychiatric Association, 1998 and National Mental Health Association, 1997)
    • Depression can occur at any age but most often appears for the first time between the ages of 24 and 44. (American Psychiatric Association, 1998 and National Depressive & Manic-Depressive Association, 1999)
    • One in four women and one in 10 men will confront depression at some point in their lives. (American Psychiatric Association, 1998)
    • Two out of three persons suffering from depression do not seek or receive proper treatment. (National Mental Health Association, 1997)
    • Eighty to 90% of people who receive treatment for depression show improvement. (American Psychiatric Association, 1998)
    • People with severe, untreated depression have an estimated suicide rate of 15 percent. In fact, the number one cause of suicide in the U.S. is untreated depression. (National Depressive & Manic-Depressive Association, 1999)
    • Depression costs the U.S. $43 billion annually, when taking into account medical expenses, days missed from work, lost productivity, and premature death. Absenteeism from work alone amounts to $12 billion. (American Psychiatric Association, 1998 and American Psychological Association, 1999)
    • Depression will be the second greatest cause of premature death and disability worldwide by the year 2020. (World Health Organization, 1998)
