A bar graph showing the distribution of professional, administrative, and other patient care staff in mental health organizations in 1972 and 2000. Overall, the percentage of professional staff increased and the percentage of both administrative staff and other patient care staff declined between 1972 and 2000. At State and county hospitals, the proportion of administrative staff decreased while the proportion of other types of staff increased. At private psychiatric hospitals, professional staff increased, administrative staff decreased, and other staff remained the same. At non-Federal general hospitals and VA medical centers, an increase in the proportion of professional staff was accompanied by decreases in both administrative staff and other staff. Residential treatment centers had a small increase in the proportion of professional and other patient care staff and a small decline in the proportion of administrative staff. At all other mental health organizations, there was an increase in the proportion of other patient care staff and a decrease in the proportion of professional and administrative staff.
