A bar graph showing the referral sources for children admitted to specialty mental health organizations in 1997. Children entering inpatient programs were referred equally by a personal source (self, family, or friend) and an outpatient setting. The next most common referral source was a community setting, followed by another inpatient/residential setting. Children receiving outpatient treatment (i.e., care for less than 24 hours) most often had a personal referral, followed closely by a community-setting referral. Children had far fewer referrals from another outpatient setting or an inpatient/residential setting.
