Women, Violence and Trauma

Over the years, SAMHSA has played a leadership role in developing and disseminating knowledge about women’s mental health and substance abuse issues. Ten years ago, a SAMHSA-sponsored conference, Dare to Vision, highlighted women's struggle with the consequences of trauma and retraumatization. A SAMHSA-sponsored five-year multi-site research study Women, Co-occurring Disorders, and Violence Study (WCDVS) followed. The findings from this study and other related activities, over the past ten years, provided greater understanding about effective treatment approaches for women 18 years of age and older with co-occurring disorders and trauma histories.

The goal of the Center on Women, Violence and Trauma is to help states and communities become “trauma-informed” to offer effective aid to trauma survivors within the contexts in which they live and work.
