What's New January 2006

Birth Defects Prevention Month, which takes place annually in January, was established to increase awareness about birth defects, abnormalities that are present at birth and can lead to physical or mental disabilities. In accordance with this event, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA’s) National Mental Health Information Center’s Web site is featuring resources for community programs and activities associated with this event. This monograph explores the need for and value of preventive services for mental health and substance use disorders in health care settings.

Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) are both State-Federal partnerships. Medicaid serves low-income children and families, senior citizens, and people with severe disabilities. While Medicaid primarily serves people with incomes below the poverty line, SCHIP serves children in families with incomes above the poverty line. Each State designs both its Medicaid and SCHIP programs within broad Federal guidelines. (This guidelines document is available for download online only.)

The Provision of Mental Health Services in Managed Care Organizations (SMA03-3797)

This report presents findings from a nationally representative survey of managed care organizations. The survey results show how mental health services were provided in 1999 as well as the provision variation by product type and contracting arrangement.
